"ON THE HOME FRONT " LIVING HISTORY LESSON
Tour Overview: What does a bone, a rattle, a cork and a bicycle have to do with the air raid shelter? Meet Bert, the local Air Raid Warden and Betty, his wife, both residents of Prospect in WW2. Students will take on the role of school children in WW2, each with their own ID tag, based on children who attended the local schools in 1942. They will participate in a pretend air raid drill, see model aeroplanes of the day and swear allegiance to King VI. They will learn about the role of air raid wardens, the boy scouts and women; food and clothing rationing and life in general on the home front. Students will be shown a short film of air raid training on Prospect Oval. Students will learn about the huge efforts of school children to assist with the war effort, in particular through the Schools Patriotic Fund. Students will be able to reflect upon the notion of children being active citizens and to make a difference in the local community and the world. Dates: to be negotiated Length of Tour: 40 minutes (30 min interactive talk and 10 minutes viewing the shelter, both inside and out) Where: Prospect Air Raid Shelter, Willcox Avenue, Prospect Nb there are 13 steep steps to access the shelter Cost: $2 gold coin donation from each student. Money collected will go towards the development of student resources and display items. "TRAIN AS A WW2 AIR RAID WARDEN" LIVING HISTORY LESSON
Betty and Bert Button (fictional air raid wardens) will take you through six training exercises : "Evacuate", "Check Supplies", "Over and Out", "On Patrol", "Bandage That Head", "Find The Unexploded Bombs" to become a WW2 Air Raid Warden. Learn about the huge efforts made by ordinary people on the Homefront during WW2. Students will be divided into 6 groups - adult volunteers will need to be provided by the school for each group.
